The Pros of Being Watched at Hilmar High School
Readers of the Jacket Journal, imagine yourself walking home all alone, when suddenly you’re pulled into an unknown car. Without cameras being on every street, you would probably never be found. In today’s world having cameras helps solve many mysteries for example criminals, vandalism and other issues. Now, being watched isn't as bad as it seems, right?
We need cameras at every high school. High school students might steal or vandalize school property, and having cameras around capture all of the unknown. I know for a fact, when I enter my school knowing there are cameras, I feel safe. In today’s world we need something quick and effective, and what's better than claiming surveillance cameras? As a result, there has been research that determines after connecting the surveillance cameras, students feel secure.
Students might debate that having surveillance cameras at school is an awful, bad and horrible thing to do. It’s difficult to argue with that view when it comes down to our privacy. It’s a great thing that there is a solution: putting surveillance cameras where they should be placed and at the same time providing students their privacy. Being a student at Hilmar High, I do not feel threatened, knowing that there are cameras rolling at all times, in fact some friends of mine and I feel very protected. After catching an incident on footage, we’ll be glad knowing it was captured on tape.
Going to school in Hilmar, which is known for “occasional theft,” is a big part why cameras were installed. In fact, at Hilmar High the surveillance cameras were purposely placed in certain areas, to capture any issues. You might say that students should demonstrate their good character, but after many chances, surveillance cameras is what it came to. My response is that the surveillance cameras, make the students second guess their actions. Multiple students that were known for bad actions, improved after realizing there was cameras around.
I know for a fact, at Hilmar High students act like responsible teenagers. I’m concerned that students might try to hide somewhere they know a camera isn't placed, but Hilmar is a small town--we hear about everything. All of the vandalizing on windows and on walls had led to being on tape every minute you're in school. If every student were to behave like a responsible Yellowjacket, our school wouldn't have to waste money on surveillance cameras. As a class we would, trust one another.
There has been multiple times when students were spotted on tape doing something they weren't supposed to be doing. Placing cameras over our campus, was influenced by a couple of students, but now everyone feels safe. Since surveillance cameras were added to our campus, there has been less vandalism.
Knowing that we are being taped makes me feel that our district put cameras up because they care for the safety of the students. If the cameras were ever to be removed, I’m positive students would be concerted. What are lessons to be learned is your against being taped? The biggest one that screams out to me is, reduce the vandalism and any other bad issues. Removing the cameras from schools would only bring, a lot more issues.
As a student from a school that has cameras, I know it’s only for the best of the students. Surveillance cameras should be rolling at every school.
