Family events are places where many heavy topics come up, but politics is the most popular topic across the country. Listening to my family argue about which president was better or why this one sucks quickly gets very old. The New York Times did an article written by Charles Homans and Alyce McFadden on Oct. 18, 2022, which stated “Nearly one in five voters said that politics have hurt their relationships with friends and family”.  Like many other people, I get annoyed listening to my family fight about unbelievably stupid things that they can’t control. In my opinion, it’s pointless fighting about such things especially since it isn’t going to fix anything. People hate to admit it but politics has been and will be our country's downfall. It’s pretty safe to say that politics have divided us as people, as a nation, and pretty much the entire world. I don’t think that this is what the founding fathers of America wanted it to turn into.

One of the biggest problems with the American political system is that it has succeeded in putting a huge gap between everyone in the country and even out of it. Everybody has their own beliefs and opinions about everything, especially when it comes to the government. The whole Red and blue/ Liberal and Conservative thing has gotten out of hand. Plus the whole system hasn’t worked well regarding the people. Like people who refer to themselves as  “liberal” might hold some of the same opinions as someone who calls themselves a “conservative” and vice versa, so what exactly is the point of putting ourselves in the party and then proceeding to call out the other party for being in the opposite party. This has led to other people generalizing others just for their beliefs and opinions like hating on someone who calls themselves conservative because “all conservatives hate gay people” or “all liberals wanna waste money on pointless things” like it isn’t helpful. It just isn’t an excellent way to run a country like that, it’s problematic and the government thrives off of it.

Political parties have divided the country, and people, into two sides: Red vs Blue, Republicans vs Democrats, Left vs Right, Conservative vs Liberal, whatever people wanna call it, it’s the same thing. It is a division of the so-called “United States” of America. I personally don’t identify myself with either of the parties because I think it’s stupid. I mean no matter which one someone identifies with they still are going to get yelled at and hated on because that’s what we know how to do, it’s the thing that we have all been taught. Nyu students of the School of Education and Social Sciences wrote “first time on record that negative sentiment for the opposition outstrips positive feelings for one’s partisan affiliation” If someone calls themselves a liberal or conservative then they would get called out and loathed by the other party. I feel the way that people have split up between red and blue has put some forced opinions onto the people of those parties. I mean it’s gotten to the point that every party has forced opinions about everything. Now everything in our country has such a bad reputation. It’s hard to think of the good things about America when there are so many bad things. I mean our government and the people in our country have made it embarrassing to live here.

When other people from other nations thought of America they thought of a place of freedom and liberty, They thought that it was the best country in the world; but now when they think of our country they laugh. People used to dream about coming here but because our
