An Open Letter to Donald Trump
Dear Mr. Trump,
Recently, you spoke of banning Muslims from the US. You need to understand that many terrorists say that they perform certain actions for Islam, but that not all Muslims are terrorists.
After Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, Japanese Americans were rounded up and put into camps. Later, the US realized their mistake. Mr. Trump, who knows? Maybe you'll be president. Do you really want to affect so many innocent lives? There are over one billion Muslims in this world, and banning them from the US results in a huge number of people affected.
Also, banning all Muslims is taking an idea to an extreme. We are blaming the mistakes of one group on an entire group of religious followers. Christians are'nt blamed for what Adolf Hitler did, so in the same way, Muslims shouldn't be blamed for what ISIS is doing.
The 14th Amendment states that the first duty of the government is to protect its people. However, exiling Muslims from our country is not the solution.
I'm going to be honest- I don't have a better way to solve this problem, and if I did, I would make sure it would be known. What I do know is that such a law cannot be made, for it would mean that we haven't learned from some of history's biggest blunders- classifying someone a certain characteristic or behavior, taking an idea to an extreme, and looking ahead into the future. Don't ban Muslims, Mr. Trump. It will be a decision you regret. So let's look back, gather what we know, learn well, and move forward. Thank you.
