Today, humans are changing the Earth’s climate by burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests. These activities produce excessive greenhouse gases, an essential factor leading to climate change and global warming. According to climate change research from NASA, the Earth’s average surface temperature has risen about 1.14 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century (1). Climate change has triggered the sea level to rise by about 8 inches since 1880. Additionally, the frequency of the strongest hurricanes has increased since the 1980s (2). Climate change has profound negative effects on agriculture and threatens species with extinction. More and more, people have begun to understand the need to respond to the existential danger climate change poses. However, strategic progress is still dilatory. In particular, the high cost of energy-saving technology makes it hard for those countries that do not have the funds to afford it. Thus, artificial intelligence is a booming technology that can be a cheap and economically viable solution to help the planet.

First and foremost, people can help relieve climate change with artificial intelligence with its garbage classification system. Nowadays, most unclassified garbage is burnt, producing considerable greenhouse gases that can promote climate change. However, approximately 75 percent of the waste is recyclable (3). From this statistic, we can see that humans cannot accurately classify what garbage is recyclable or not. Thus, artificial intelligence can be an applicable tool to help sort through waste products. Artificial intelligence can recognize different types of garbage through its visual transmission and multilayer neural network technology. Its robotic arms can put different types of rubbish in their respective containers. With this system, recyclable waste can be reused by handling and processing. As a result, there will be less garbage needed to burn, decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and helping heal the planet from the damage we have already done.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence can help humans design data-specific plans to decrease greenhouse gas's effect on the climate. Worldwide sensors, meters, and monitors can collect enormous data that artificial intelligence can analyze to discover the ecological variables that affect the global climate. With this information, artificial intelligence can rapidly generate models that diminish the effect of the most significant climate change factors. In this way, governments can choose the most suitable plan for their specific country based on these future plans. Data science experts have already invented an artificial intelligence software system called REX, which is based on machine learning algorithms (4). Whenever REX receives a task, the system will naturally query a huge software module library and assemble it into its ideal form to understand the data. REX technology can help analyze climate data and generate a perfect plan for the earth. Thus, climate change will get a breakthrough if we apply these types of artificial intelligence.

Lastly, artificial intelligence can help humans anticipate disasters caused by global warming. Climate change has already impacted on humanity; hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters now occur more frequently. As a result, accurate disaster predictions to reduce financial and human loss would be very beneficial. Unfortunately, although some climate prediction models already exist, they do not accurately forecast weather-based disasters very well. However, artificial intelligence can gradually build a more reliable model by learning from the information we already have in real-time. In this way, citizens can receive warnings of harsh disasters not only quicker and more accurately, which can give them more time to protect themselves.

And so, the dangerously changing climate poses a massive threat to the ecosystem, and the use of artificial intelligence can help alleviate these issues and provide a superior plan for the future. However, to successfully use artificial intelligence to solve problems, humans not only need to develop artificial intelligence itself but also to find new strategies to combat climate change. Essentially, everyone should be aware of the dangers of climate change so that the people of the world can work together to solve this problem that threatens us all.

The author's comments:

My work addresses how artificial intelligence can alleviate climate change. In the past, when I watched a documentary about Antarctica, the melting of ice caused by global warming caused many penguins to crowd on a small piece of ice. Their home is gradually disappearing, giving me a deep depression of climate change. At the same time, climate change will cause pollution of the earth and the extinction of animals, and this may even be a significant cause of human extinction many years later. Therefore, artificial intelligence is a trend in the current society, and it will also be a vital tool to solve climate change.
