I Have a Dream
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”
( http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm). That is not what is happening in colleges all over the United Sates with affirmative action were colleges give extra points to toughs who are minorities, women or at any disadvantages such as bad home environment. Personally I do not believe in affirmative action although who are in bad conditions should get extra points.
The conditions of school’s all over the United States are poor and terrible conditions and are hard to learn from.
Like in East St. Louis schools have sewage problems and there is a lot of crime, crime so bad that the police cant control it and some ”Teachers are running out of chalk and paper, their paychecks are arriving two weeks late”(Kozol 3). This is a bad environment to learn in were there is crime all around you and even the school doesn’t have enough school supplies for the teachers and If a student can go though this environment and make the grade I think he or she should get extra points to get into school to better themselves.
Morris 2
What if were looking at a white male and a black female have both gone through a good school, but the male makes great grades and the black female does good in school but is still behind the white male in score although, because she is female and black she gets extra points and out ranks the male and the male doesn’t get to go to that school, is that right? Should school base their admission based on race or gender. If schools do that it defeats the propose of what Martin Luther King said when he said that people should be judged of there character black or white. If collages think it will racism go away they are sadly mistaken because racism is making a group of people seem different from others and if minorities get extra points just because of there race that is racism, because it makes it seem like cretin races are not capable of getting into collage by themselves. The truth is that we are all the same, and we all are smart but most of all we are all capable of earning our admission to collage.
.
Martin Luther’s dreams have not come true because groups of people are being judged because of their skin or gender. When I go to collage I want to be judged on my knowledge and I want all my hard work to pay off but someone beats me out because of there skin I am going to be a little angry. Is this what you want a world filled with racism and hate and segregation? I believe affirmative action is wrong and admission should be based on how smart you are and if you can make the grades while facing the troubles that come with a bad environment than he or she should get extra points.
