Mahatma Gandhi said, “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.” Violence is not an issue specific to one single country or place. It happens all around the world and can happen to anyone. It's a worldwide phenomenon, and that means it’s a topic that most people are familiar with. The most important reason why we need to talk about violence is that the more we talk about it, the more likely it gets that we will be able to spread awareness about it, and be better able to identify abusive behaviors and take active steps to fight it. The approach of street outreach and community norm change through public education and neighborhood events would better foster beliefs that violence is not acceptable. It would increase residents’ willingness to act in ways to reduce the continuation of violence. Modifying the physical and social environment, and reducing exposure to community-level risks are approaches that can reduce the continuation of violence and can have long-term benefits by reducing children's exposure to violence.
