Unconditionally We Love- An Ode to Lelah Alcorn
If my son came to me
Saying that he was meant to be a girl
I'd smile in his eyes
And say "Son, God made you perfectly."
I'd sit him down, teach him how to dance, take him to dinner, and take him shopping.
Buying he and I matching suits, clothes, watches, hats and bowties.
Hugging, high fiving and fist pumping him continuously
Building my son's self-esteem.
Letting him know that it's okay to want to be comfortable inside yourself.
But give your current self a chance first.
I'd tell him God makes no mistakes.
I'd tell him, God loves all of His children.
I'd tell him, Jesus dies for everyone.
I'd ask him "Did you have fun today?"
If he says "yes" or "no"- I'll ask
"Do you love yourself?"
If he says
"no"-
I'll try another approach...
I'd let his mother take him out- getting them matching dresses- getting him a wig, makeup, shoes, jewls, earrings... and give him the talk about the essence of a woman and feminism.
Then we will ask him "Do you love yourself?"
If he loves himself- if he says "yes"- then we will support.
We will be the parents who will be screaming in their face that they are "NOT" a disgrace- that they are more than what everyone says they are.
Are we really all just who we're sexually attraced to?
Is that enough to change everything? Is that enough to determine everything that we're meant to do?
Everything who we're meant to be?
We are more than that!
We'd tell him- that no matter what- read the bible and go to church- know that we love you and God loves you more and you're equal- and we trust you.
We're a family- and unconditionally, we love you... and God does more.

Hearing Lelah Alcorn's story made me so sad because no one deserves to feel insiginificant. No one deserves to feel like their life doesn't matter.
No one deserves to feel like their purpose on this Earth is determined by their sexuality or preference.
We're all important and I believe God believes that too.
