Red, White, and Blue. As emblems of patriotic spirit, these hues color American lives with their significance. Historically, Old Glory Red signifies valor, White demonstrates purity, and Old Glory Blue represents justice; however, the nationally ubiquitous beauty of this billowing banner illustrates opportunity, sacrifice, and ambition.

The American flag waved at Ellis Island. Red was the strength of those who left their families in search of a better life. White was the clean slate offered to the diverse masses upon arrival. Blue was the ocean that carried immigrants to America, a symbol of the sacrifices made by tens of thousands.

The American flag soars worldwide at United States embassies and government buildings. Red is the energetic vitality with which America spearheads national and international affairs. White is the color of the most important government building in the United States, where significant and oftentimes difficult decisions are made. Blue is the promotion of peace in American endeavors.

The American flag sways on the moon. Red is the bold dynamism propelling Americans into a new age of exploration. White is the new beginnings and opportunities--the formation of NASA, the exploration of Mars, and the deeper investigation into space--that came along with this milestone. Blue is the swirling galaxies that infinitely surround our Earth, a reminder of the ceaseless potential for discoveries.

The American flag ripples above war memorials and at the funerals of soldiers. Red is the blood that spilled from millions of soldiers who protect American rights. White is the marble monuments, memorializing valiant feats into immortality. Blue is the uniform in which a soldier’s body is lowered into the ground, an attestation to their heroism.

The American flag flutters in my classrooms. History pours from the stitching of the fabric, a constant reminder of its significance. Opportunity, sacrifice, and ambition unmistakably reflect in three simple colors. Red, White, and Blue.
