I recently watched a video about two african american athletes; Tommie Smith and Carlos who won Olympic medals in 1968. As the national anthem played, they raised their black-gloved fists while standing on the podium. Their gesture aims to protest against racism and show solidarity with people fighting against inequalities in America. The right glove signified black power whereas the left glove signified black unity, the black scarf signified blackness and being shoeless signified poverty. I was extremely moved by their gesture and realised how brave it must have been at the time.
