Read to Me, Baby
The sun has set,
the night is clear
and she opens the door to his room.
She tip-toes toward his bed,
clutching the book to her breast.
The pretty girl wakes him from his rest.
“Read to me, baby. Read to me” she pleads.
He wraps his arms around her,
and sighs.
He opens the book, old and worn
and begins to read.
She laughs at all the funny parts,
frown at every conflict
and smiles brilliantly at the end.
Her eyes are tired and she begins to drift
But...
just before, just before
she breathes:
“I love you baby, I love you”
and he smiles as he sleeps.
