Anne With an E
She sat there patiently, but couldn’t hold her joy;
So quickly did she speak, not once did she stutter.
Old and soft was his hand, and his personality too;
As she shook with delight, did this frighten him now.
My name is Anne,
And it’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance;
And questions do I have,
About the place which you call Green Gables.
And must you be Matthew,
You seem ever so lovely
Now a look of confusion there,
upon Mr. Cuthbert’s face
Though the Cuthbert’s had lunged for a boy,
There stood a pale girl with red braids
Upon freckles galore and homely form,
stood instead in the vital boy’s place
As hours had passed, Anne amazed by the scenery;
They took off to the place she would call home
She spoke with such meaning of numerous topics,
Which left Matthew surprised and lost for words
When arriving upon great farm and land,
A comfortable reside
She stood in the carriage; a bright warm smile,
Green Gables is real and we’re home

My inspiration for the poem, Anne with an E, came from my love for the show. It depicts a beautiful story of an orphan’s first journey to a place she would begin to call home. I chose to write about the very beginning of Anne’s story because it holds a lot of meaning just by reading it. Though there is a set meaning, there could be so many wonderful interpretations. I paired it with a narrative structure because I am narrating someone’s story. I wanted to be able to write the poem in a way where I wouldn’t have to rely too much on the structure so it was easier to tell the story.
