Cabin Chronicles

V1

I didn’t want to go, my brother got to pick the movie on the ride up. Underdog; a choice I was happy with but I would never admit that to him. The drive was long enough for two but I was sleepy. The vibrations of the dirt road stir me awake. As we pull into the driveway I’m suddenly excited, another little girl my age playing with her dog next door. She looked pretty, I want to know her. My parents unload the car, I don’t ask, I just leave.

“Hi I’m Kendall what’s your name”

“Jody”

“Want to be my friend”

“Sure”

I didn’t go back to the cabin, I met both of her dogs. I asked to make sandcastles and she brought out all of her toys. I pick up wet sand and let it drip up to make the top of my castle. I look over, mine is way better than hers. I look out into the lake and notice a floating board.

“What’s that?”

“You jump off it”

I sprint into my cabin to find my swimsuit, my family tries to talk to me but I don’t care. I get outside and Jody is already on the pier, I run out to her. We both look down into the water. I see green leaves and lily pads floating around. I had only been in pools and clear water, this was new to me. She jumps right in and starts swimming to the float. In fear I would get left behind I follow. I barely even notice the leaves sliding across my skin. We swim until I hear our parents yelling to come home. I’m so tired, I could sleep forever.

“Want to come over for a tea party tomorrow?”

“Yes I will bring Mr. Bear”

“Bye Jody”

“Bye Kendall”

V2

I step into the car, ready to see my friend. I don’t care what movie we watch, I just want to get there fast. This year my mom is letting me drive the golf cart. I can’t wait to drive Jody around and take my parents to the store. Too excited to take a nap, I focused on the movie. By the time the second one finishes we hit the dirt road and pull into the driveway. I look out my window. I know we're here when we pass Cira’s Red, White and Blue. My aunt buys me scratch off tickets every time we come up north, I'm so excited because this time I get more than one. Jody isn’t there but two boys are. Cute ones, brothers, far down swimming on the other side of the beach. The older one looks like my age, I wonder if they will play with me and Jody. I run straight to her house and knocked on the door. An older woman greets me.

“Is Jody there?”

“JODYY”

She comes climbing down from her loft. It looks so cool I wonder when she’ll show me it.

“Hey Kendall”

“Hi Jody, who are those boys at the end of the beach?”

“Oh I don’t know they only come for the 4th of July weekend.”

“We should go swim with them”

I dont wait for an answer. Both already in our swimsuits I start walking to the end of the beach. We get closer but they don’t notice. Without asking anyone I start walking on their pier. I get to the end.

“HEY”

They look up at us from the water.

“CAN WE SWIM WITH YOU”

“OK”

Me and Jody jump into the water, and swim out to their float.

“ what are your names”

“Tyler”

“Caleb”

I only look at the older one. Tyler. That name suits him. He looks back at me.

“Who are you?”

“Kendall”

“Jody”

I look next to me. I’m not the only one looking at Tyler. Oh well I just want to swim. Tyler is funny. He pushes me into the water and I drag him with me. I should invite them to Cira’s Red, White, and Blue for dinner with my family.
