Players of Baseball
Cheers reach me
as I step onto the gravel.
Not for me, for them,
as they run and dive
face-first into the bases.
I see my friend
and we watch together
batter after batter stand
up to the plate, waiting
on the ball to leave
the pitcher’s hand
so they can swing their bat
in hopes of hitting it
hard enough and straight enough
to bring them, base after base,
all the way home.
We add our cheers
to the heightening cacophony.
