There's Something About
There’s something about you,
my true lover,
that for some reason,
I love watching you sleep.
I have no idea why.
I don’t know why I stay up
until one or two at night,
only to watch you sleep.
As I watch you sleep,
I see your chest rising and falling.
You don’t have a shirt so
I see your bare chest.
It rises as I hear you breath in,
and it slowly goes down as you
breath out.
I hear your breathing.
You don’t snore and I love that.
Your breathing is slow and easy,
it lets me know that you’re still with me.
I’m not alone in this world.
Your breathing is like a sweet sound to me.
I feel that by you breathing,
you’re telling me that you’re not going to leave me.
I look at your sleeping face
and realize how fragile you look.
Even though you wear a poker face
that shows that you’re a strong person,
I know your true emotions.
I know how fragile you are.
The type of person you are when
we’re alone.
The type of person that only I know.
I can’t believe that you’re my lover.
It’s very quiet as you sleep.
It’s quiet enough that I can hear
your heartbeat.
Your heartbeat is like
a drum.
A drum that never stops.
I hope it never does stop.
If that happens, that means
that I’m losing you and that
you will no longer be with me.
I will never be able to bush a strand
of your brown hair away.
I will never be able to say,
I love you.
As I think this a tear rolls down my face
because I can’t fathom the idea of
forever losing you.
I can’t bring myself to think that
because it was you who showed me
how to love.
It was you who showed me what
love was.
It’s because of you that I learned to love
and I won’t be able to bring myself to love
some else because you know that I only love you.
It’s you who listens when I need to speak my mind.
All along it’s always been you.
You start to stir
and you start to bring quickly.
I lift my head from my pillow and due to
the moonlight I see that you’re sweating.
You move your head back and forth,
then I hear you speak,
No...No.
But your eyes are still closed,
you’re still in your sleep.
I get up from my side of the bed and
go next to you.
I want to save you from your nightmare.
Come on, wake up.
It’s a nightmare,
wake up!
I shake you to get you
to wake up.
Then I see your brown eyes.
They’re filled with terror,
they move as they search for something.
You’re still breathing quickly.
Your eyes then rest on me.
You...you’re still here,
I hear you say.
Then you sit up and put your arms around me.
Your breathing slows down.
Joseph, you’re still with me.
But why do you keep saying this?
What did you dream about?
It’s alright, it was only a nightmare.
Was it that bad?
The words exit my mouth.
I don’t know how you’ll respond
to it.
But all I hear you say is,
It’s not important.
All that matters is that you’re here.
I love you.
So much that you’ll never know.
You confess your love to me
but I know how much you love me.
Your arms are still around me.
I wish I could forever be in your arms.
In your arms I feel safe,
I feel secure.
I look into your cinnamon eyes and say,
I love you too.
Now go back to sleep.
It was just a nightmare.
Don’t worry, I’m not leaving.
You lay back down,
your arm is still around my neck.
I lay my head on your chest
and see you close your eyes.
Time flies by because then,
I hear your soft breathing.
I know you’re asleep.
Even after everything that’s happened,
I look at you.
There’s something about me
that loves watching you sleep.
I lift my head from your chest and
you at you.
I don’t know what I did to deserve you.
I don’t know why you love me.
But all I know is that
I love you for it.
Thanks for being in my life.
I say these words to you.
Words that are hard for me to say
to you.
Words that I promise to say
to you more often to show you that I love you.
I give you a soft kiss on your cheek.
I love you.
I lay my head back on your chest.
As I wait for sleep to take over me,
I hear your heartbeat.
It’s like a lullaby to me.
I listen to it as sleep takes me.
