I Hope the Future is No Place for Death
Raindrops fell on a tin roof in May;
They all hoped to make it to June.
Rain fell again in July;
They never saw August.
Maybe rain will stop
In September,
But I still
Hear May’s
Rain.
Rain
Splatters,
Dark like blood,
On that tin roof.
It won’t truly stop,
But storm clouds will recede;
Sometimes May won’t be rainy.
I hope our rain stays in the clouds
And falls to the roof another May

A nonet-reverse nonet couplet. I tend to think a lot about the future and what it might bring in hopeful and hopeless tones. Written after my grandfather died, the falling and rising of the line syllable length follows my thought process and coping of the event. From more hopeless to more hopeful.
