ALICE
Alice, dear Alice, now what's got you down?
What meddling pixie has brought on your frown?
Now child, sweet child! whatever is wrong?
To force out your tears, to make your face long?
Now child, now child, that is quite enough!
I tell you, stop crying--cease with your snuff!
This will not do--indeed it will not!
Sit here and tell me what's breaking your heart!
You spent your time waiting for good things to come.
You've hoped hopeless dreams while watching the setting sun.
Until whispering winds pulled you away,
from the place you rested, on that boring day.
White rabbits with pocket watches running about,
Who cry most unhappily than the most unhappiest trout.
And into your dreams you did descend,
Where creatures of myth you did befriend--
Animals who listened to your weeping tale
And a mother who ignored her baby's wail;
And a Cheshire puss who guided you along,
Grinning quite unnaturally, yet not so wrong.
A tea party frozen in the span of time,
Where crazed hatters--spring hares!--chose to dine.
A mock turtle failing to mock what others say,
Instead choosing to sob about most saddening days.
A court of cards who must stand the Queen's shouts,
an incompetent King who can't shut her out.
And together they protested to the Queen in fear
In court, In trial, and then it all disappeared.
You've traveled to a land where fantasy resides,
Where all of your loved ones live side by side.
And here you cry because you're stuck in this world,
Where now you are only a little girl.
Alice, dear Alice, cease your repining.
Things are not over, now stop with your crying.
Your Cheshire puss and your Mad Hatter friends
have not disappeared, their story has no end.
Now come child, come--a frown will not do!
You may have loved them, but they surely loved you!
And do you believe they could stand seeing you cry:--
To imagine such a thing--what a horrendous lie!
The end is just the beginning
of another ending. But that ending
is still the beginning
of another story.
So smile, my Alice
And dry your tears
Your story is still
continuing
so smile
and be
joyous
Alice.
