Orphan Boy

The world is dark
and so is my heart.
As I look out the window
it feels like no-one cares.
Tear after tear drips down my face
my eyes start to burn
and my heart continues to ache.
It would be different, so different
if I had a home,
a home with a family,
a family who loves and cares.
It would be different, so different
if I had at least one friend,
a friend to comfort me, to be there,
a shoulder to cry on.
Everything around me is still and silent,
the moon stares hard and distant.
I am cold.
All I have to warm me
is the thin sheet they gave me.
The sheet they gave me when I came here,
when I was just a baby.
Nothing has changed since then;
the food, the workers, the children,
and the unanswered questions – Why? Who? Where? What?
Why did they leave me at this orphanage?
Who are they, and who am I?
Where did I come from, and where will I go?
What will happen to me?
I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
My story will unfold at it's own pace
and nothing I can do to change that.
