Summer nights
On the summer nights
I was so sure were eternal.
When we’d float off the ground
twirling into the night sky.
The only moments that we could forget our somber pasts
and where we came from.
Not think of our bleak futures
and the road that lay ahead.
We could have danced with the stars for hours
and so close were we to letting go
and floating off into space forever.
Becoming nothingness.
But we would find ourselves back on the grass
at the breaking of each dawn.
Soaked with dew
or maybe it was our tears,
because we could not capture the moment
and encase it in our souls forever.
We could only wave goodbye
as it was whisked away
never to return to those summer nights.
