Always and Forever
I remember.
I remember cold snowflakes landing on my cheek;
The way my mittens felt when brushed against my face.
I remember the color of my toes, blue and numb as I ran through the snow.
The icy pathway leading to my front door, the one with the big red bow.
I remember winter.
Lying in my canopy bed, next to my mother.
I remember my hands on her big warm belly.
I felt a heartbeat.
Ba boom. Ba boom.
I remember my sister’s heartbeat.
She could not be seen,
Only felt.
I remember the circus.
My father took me the night my sister was born.
The elephants.
Like thunder, stomp through the tent.
I remember the phone call.
Hurry, she’s on her way.
Goodbye elephants.
I remember her feet, soft as a cloud.
Her eyes were stars from the winter night sky.
I remember the pink bear I picked out, special for her.
My sister.
I remember how it felt.
No longer alone.
My best friend. Always by my side.
I’ll never forget.
