Second Summer in the Appalachians
Thumbing turgid age-rings down
the side of elastic sequoia. Black
pine roots wilting bruise-pools
and forget-me-nots. Here, Eden was ethanol-
polluted by hooked fields of
grain thickening in cold crevices. Cheeks
stung by ancient wasps: lips touched
and sinews tensed. Two eagles’
nests lodged in mountain musculature scabbed
as an ivory crown cracked. Fireflies’
light-bulbs ignited turpentine
tributaries, conflagrating stolid
blues and achy scarlet. Splinters lodged
in then-dewy flesh festered into welts
like thistles intertwined.
