Lower me not into the thankless ground
For hungry worms to slowly eat away
Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds

I lost myself in tide-charts, but I found
An empty, waiting tomb upon the quay
(Lower me not into the thankless ground)

Worn and frayed, my soul slowly unwound
Brave by night but coward in the day
(Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds)

In night-full seas how endings seemed profound
When lightningwaves would my heart flood and sway
(Lower me not into the thankless ground)

With frothing, foaming fury all around
Surrender seemed the safest, swiftest way
(Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds)

On rocky shores my ship has run aground
And lies and rots in endless ocean spray
(Lower me not into the thankless ground)

With seaweed hair and fleshless lips I drowned
And washed ashore in some forsaken bay
(Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds)

For years I dreamed of sailing through the sound
Too late I learned the current flows one way
(Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds)

Beneath the ocean spray, the waves surround
My sinking soul I – careless – tossed away
Lower me not into the thankless ground
Inside my shell of bones, a heart still pounds.
