I'll Be a Chair For You
I'll be a chair for you
I remember
Small hands
Holding a green book
Tucked in bed with my sister
The Giving Tree, saying,
I'll be a chair for you.
Lights shine
People laugh politely
The bride is so beautiful
Before they can stop me,
The wedding cake says,
I'll be a chair for you.
Marble walls
A cleaning lady
The golden stairs are polished
One—by—one—
I leap on the banister
As it makes a squeaky promise,
I'll be a chair for you.
Now I am tall
With powdered cheeks,
Standing in a crowded subway
As a funny-looking man
Pats his lap and hollers drunkenly,
I'll be a chair for you.
