Happiness is like a butterfly
The more you chase it
The more it will elude you
But if you turn your attention to other things
It will come and sit softly on your shoulder. - Henry David Thoreau

The ship of state is but a slaver's vessel
And mutiny tempts us so
For Lady Liberty is chained
Hanged from the prow
As the ship rocks to and fro

The sailors are drunk on barrels of rum
Being rowdy, rancorous, and raucous
The captain calls for his crew
To halt and regroup
But they only remain caustic

Divided are they, two factions of men
A fraction of which are disloyal
The ship is in a state
Of uncertain decay,
A great tumultuous turmoil

The author's comments:
I wrote this piece in response to the American government shutdown of 2013. Altercations are inevitable, but I feel that what has occurred could have easily been avoided; the American people seem to be forgetting their democratic roots. A good government argues with itself to resolve its problems; to stymie progression for the sake of one's own interests is an unfortunate thing to do. I hope that upon reading this poem, people will better understand the anxieties that have arisen here in America and unite so that we may advance in a positive direction as a nation.
