Set Free
The churning waves reached up
and kissed the face of the treacherous cliff
sending blackened sea spray towards the starless night
above stood a small figure who didn't mind the dark
for she had lost hope for ever seeing the light
a small girl stood numb to the cold
frail hands hung limply at her sides
as she watched the ocean and the horizon fade away
she had kept waiting for the sun
but realized night would never turn into day
the storm's winds took hold of her ribbon
carrying it far above the onyx sea
she watched the pale thing float
with the saddest longing
wishing that she too could be set free
her faded dress whipped in the open wind
lifting toward the raven sky
and her bare feet welcomed the jagged edge
as she whispered her final goodbye
