I wish the brass had thought of this before.

The Germans had put in all of their gun
Some of the men said they were done.

They put us in the Higgins boats
At least they float.

Our captain said 30 seconds
We’re all going to die, some of us reckon.

Many of the men frowned
When the ramp dropped down.

Half of them died
When we jumped over the side.

Into the water so blue
But redder and redder it grew.

When out of the sea we came
It began to rain.

But not of water was this spell
Instead, it was the artillery shell.

I heard someone call, fire in the hole
It was then I saw our goal.

A bunker on the hill
Too many, it was going to kill.

We climbed to the top and crawled slower
As we called in the flame thrower.

When I asked if the captain was in reach
'Twas then I saw him on the beach.

I love history, especially American military history. I recently visited the National WW2 Museum in New Orleans, where I met a WW2 veteran who explained the building of Higgins boats and their importance in the war effort. These combined to inspire this poem.
