Sand pouring through an hourglass,
a whisper in the wind
A river who has run his course,
a true and faithful friend.
A random act of kindness,
the smallest work of prose
A black bird who has learned to fly,
the beauty of a rose.
The harshest night of fear turned 'round
by a warm and gentle touch...
These are the things we notice least
and yet we mourn so much.

The author's comments:
This piece was written after the death of a much-loved teacher and influence in my life. I have experienced loss prior to his, however the added grief provoked this realization. This poem is about appreciating what we have- the "little things", as they say.

Great job! Simplicity in symbolism, how true poetry should be. All of us here at Johns Creek are truly proud of you.

I am a teacher and after reading your poem and knowing why you wrote it, I was moved to tears. I can only hope that in some way I can have an impace on those I teach the way this teacher obviously had such an enormous impact on you. Wonderfully written.

Lauren,

I am so proud of you! Your poem made me think of my dad and Mrs. Rudder. I, too, have experienced loss and your poem causes me to feel a sense of bittersweetness.

Well Done!

Mrs. Collins

I loved the poem and the picture. You are mature beyond your years to realize how important the "little" things truly are. Keep writing and snapping your camera!!!!
