Braver Than a Brave

It began as just another day
But I best be careful what I say
All around me they stand
One woman to too many a man…
It started out as a warm afternoon
In late June
The year was 1755
And the entire earth was much alive
Going about my business, I did
Then the circumstances began to skid.
By Shawnee Indians we were attacked
And with my sister-in-law and sons I would no longer interact
My niece killed, and my mother dead
Neighbors gone and husband fled
It happened so quickly, but I mustn’t forget the way we go
For someday I will go home…
Nearly two seasons would pass
Before I would construct a way to surpass
Taking a friend over 500 miles
All the while meeting unbearable trials
Climbing boulders as large as a house
Falling into freezing water due to the winds dowse
Controlled by her stomach, my companion would turn on me
Starving, she threatened to eat me !
I shouted at God, telling him he could have been kinder
Then took it back knowing that worse things could occur.
Starving, naked and half dead I arrived in Eggleston, Virginia
This event truly tested my sanity, spirit and stamina
About ten years later my son was ransomed
But my other, this world he was taken from
I knew that the only way I was to survive was to behave
Braver than a brave…

There is a film and a book, both of the same title, about this woman called "Follow the River."
