The Feeling
You know that feeling that you get
When nothing quite goes right?
The feeling that you wake up with
In the middle of the night?
Even if something good happened,
The feeling doesn’t think so.
So you turn over at three a.m.
And pray that nobody knows.
You’d be so embarrassed if anyone knew
Of this funny anxiety inside of you.
You’ve been told that they all have it too –
But that’s just simply too good to be true.
So you turn over at three a.m.
And hope that no one suspects.
Then you wake up next morning and think,
“Why be what everyone expects?”
And you set off for school with fresh resolve.
The new ideas make you feel like you’re flying.
Then you get there and magically,
all your confidence is painfully dying.
So you quietly return to your old self
Though some part of you doesn’t agree.
And you squash it down and tell it this:
“They’ll say nasty things about me.”
What a pitiful reason, that part of you says,
and you ignore it, though you know it’s right.
And before you know it the day is over
And you sink back into the night,
where insecurities creep like monsters in closets
And “what-ifs” are screaming like mad.
So what do you do when the people you loved
Are only part of the life that you had?
