The Thing
There it goes, away by itself
Innocently meandering along
Don’t ask me where it’s headed
Because I might be wrong
Don’t ever look after it
No matter what you do
It’ll know you’re watching
Come back and swallow you
Whatever this thing really is
Nobody really knows
But meandering along alone
That’s the way it goes.
It doesn’t stop, it doesn’t pause
This funny thing just plods along.
It’s kind of funny how that is.
But something seems to be quite wrong.
I guess in all this contemplating
I forgot to not be gazing.
Save yourself, my poor old friend
My contemplation comes to an end.
Here comes the plodding funny thing
Where it comes from no one knows
Now I’m gone and you remain
But that’s the way it goes.
