Here's to the Unsung Heroes
A hero isn’t a face in a history book.
A hero isn’t a well-known name.
Though a hero can be,
they need not to take the blame.
I could write my poem on anyone,
everyone,
I know as a hero,
but instead
how about those whose name’s
are not caressed by the viewing eye,
those who did it for the greater good,
not to be recognized or acknowledged
not to be raised on a silver platform,
and shown off like a prized pony,
those who are uncelebrated to many,
and identified by few,
so here’s for the unsung heroes,
let your lives start anew.
Do you know Robert Goddard?
first man to build a rocket,
able to fly to the moon,
But you know Neil Armstrong,
first man on the moon,
isn’t fair is it?
How about Maria Feodorvna?
Wife of Alexander III,
when her husband ordered a death sentence,
on a innocent man,
writing a note stating:
“pardon impossible, to send to Siberia”
Maria changed it to:
“pardon, impossible to send to Siberia”
saving a life with a comma
while risking her own.
Options are compared in both stories,
Builder or rider?
One life or many?
There are people recognized throughout history
for saving
hundreds, thousands, millions,
but one life matters too
Anyone who helped make these famous heroes,
are the real heroes.
Simple things,
like leaving the cell unlocked,
for an unsuspecting war hero.
raising a child with manners, and honor,
preparing them for what may be,
an adventurous future.
Or maybe housing an innocent plaintiff
from the guilty judge.
Life has never been completely fair,
Life has always had those it favored,
and those it disliked,
then there are those who are not bound to a storybook ending,
to what others say is right,
who are only bound by
their amount of courage
and sense of good and bad,
dark and light,
villain or hero,
so here’s to the unsung heroes,
Robert Goddard,
Maria Feodorvna,
and many more,
to the builders,
the savers,
the helpers,
here’s to the people that shaped our nation,
our world,
so here’s to the unsung heroes.

I was assigned homework to write a poem on a great person. I couldn't decide, until I realized, how about just all the unsung heroes. None of my class did this, they all had important people, that were always recognized and cheerished. So I looked up unsung heroes, and found many results of people I didn't know, who did amazing things. This is for all the unsung heroes!
