not the absence of what it is
there’s so many things it’s not,
but what is it?
it’s seemingly pointless tears
in a dimly-lit public bathroom.
it’s the faces on the ceiling
at 3 in the morning in place of sleep.
it’s the it’s fine card
that’s played when it’s obviously not fine.
it’s the stare in the distance
to make up for words that are never said.
it’s the nod
that silently agrees.
it’s the smile
desperately hiding what it is.
