Burdens
Is it wrong to
want her tears to fall?
Is it wrong to wish
her hands would keep
shaking, because
even if the emotions
building inside of her
are heavy like the blood
pouring out of her mouth
whenever she speaks,
at least she is showing
some sort of feeling
besides the constant numbness
that eats her from the inside out.
The maggots that chew on her
still, stone heart
have been there since
the first time she couldn’t
bear to look at her wrists
like she used to.
She wants to love.
She wants to love more
than anything on this
planet,
But the pain and responsibility
pushed onto her like frozen snow
being shoveled to make way
for the path of someone else’s needs
will never be love.
She is no guardian angel
but she’ll cut into her shoulder blades
deep enough to make room for wings
just if it will make others happy.
One day she will feel love
that doesn’t drain her of
her purpose.
I will call that day the
day she was resurrected
so she will laugh
and forget every thorn that has
pricked her.
She’ll finally be the flower
she was meant to be.
And I’ll be at her side
the entire time until we
Make it.
