Layers

Clothing in the cold
Wet and left out to freeze
And dance violently
In the wind
Or on flesh (bare and plentiful)
In the name of preservation

We sat naked without cause
Upon dirt
Then sand
Then clay followed by flames
Bodies built upon enough heat
To fill a million lungs with ash
And yet,
The mind in power of said lungs
Patiently awaits combustion
With their footprints in the sand

Where they stand filling up slowly
They hold their heart in their head
Peeking at frozen bushes
Of love
As they peel their thorns away to reveal the petals
Too soon to fall
Now exposed to the cold
No longer hidden

Choose said meaning
For presentation is of importance
Heed the emphasis
And let one’s mind take hold of
Every said word

With the flames baring ash to the world
There are trees
Of age
And wisdom
Crowned with engagements
Worn upon all their fingers

Then,
Look to the sky and see similar
Find the rings of the planets past lovers
And question their sanity for leaving
Forget ones inability to view, and imagine a flight
Push out the thought of humanity
As nothing more
Than an unplucked bird
For they are built up more of
Flesh and blood followed by
Bone then sock
Then shoe
Then lace
And finally thought.

The author's comments:

This piece, while complicated and hard to understand at first it is about things of which have layers such as the meaning of a sentence, the Earth, petals on a rose, wings on a bird and so much more. The poem itself, as well as being about things that have layers is constructed of many.
