Southern Summer
You look down and realize your legs are sunkissed,
You hear someone say they have aloe and you know that it’s something you can’t resist.
You see a bunch of cars pull up, you count just under a dozen,
You turn and see all of them jumpin’ out and runnin’ here comes your favorite cousin.
You see your Aunt Caroline and Uncle Winston pull up next so you go give ‘em bear hugs,
You look outside and lights floating’ you grab an old mason jar and go catch lightnin’ bugs.
You are layin’ in bed with the door cracked open you can still see the shimmering light,
You holler at everyone in the house and say “Goodnight.”
You wake up the next mornin’ and see your cousins making the all the beds,
You get up and do the same but you make sure it’s all perfect including the bedspreads.
You walk down the stairs and see the adults drinking coffee,
You look around and see muffins you take a bite and think “hmmm lemon poppy.”
You get your swimmin’ suits on and go jump in the pool,
You just love this long break from school.
You walk outside and the pollen is blowin’ in the breeze,
You take a few more steps on the grass and ya gotta sneeze.
You know there will be a party when you see your mama makin’ the coleslaw,
You hear your pa yell “Here comes the in-laws.”
You are blessed to see your aunt Caroline, she brought her famous apple pie,
You watch the news to see the temps are gonna be pretty high.
You hear your mama and aunts talking in the kitchen not sure what it’s about,
You go home and help prepare for the big cookout.
You notice a buzzing so ya slapped your arm and find out it was a bee,
You walk away and go grab some fresh sweet tea.
You stand by the window and you can feel the heat,
You walk outside without a thing on your feet.
You ask your mama if your cousins can stay over if it ain't too late,
You hear her say “it’s a bit too late how ‘bout another date.”
