It was at school
She asked, she learned,
She saw on her desk
A swastika
She felt the piercing of her heart
She felt she wasn’t wanted
It was at a soccer game,
He scored, he smiled,
He saw on a sign

His knees buckled
He felt he was hated
It was at a party
She blew candles, she danced
She saw on her birthday card
A swastika
Tears fell to the ground
She felt she didn’t belong
It was at the grocery store
He grabbed a bag, he moved down the aisle
He saw it on his shopping cart
A swastika
His jaw dropped, his eyes widened
He felt he was alone
It was at school
She asked, she learned,
She saw on her desk
A heart
She felt the beating of her own heart
She felt she was wanted
It was at a soccer game,
He scored, he smiled,
He saw on a sign
A heart
His knees strengthened
He felt he was loved
It was at a party
She blew candles, she danced
She saw on her birthday card
A heart
Tears accompanied her wide smile
She felt she belonged
It was at the grocery store
He grabbed a bag, he moved down the aisle
He saw it on his shopping cart
A heart
His jaw formed a smile, his eyes shined
He felt he was appreciated

I am Jewish. There is a lot of anti-semitism happening in the world today. Accoridng to the FBI Jewish hate crimes spiked 37% in 2017. I wrote this piece to bring awernaess to this issue. Anti-semtisim is not a joke. We have to learn to accept each other by what we are. We can choose the mark that we leave when we walk our paths, wether it's a swastika or a heart.
