You’re in the yard of your Aunt’s great big blue house in Vancouver Washington. The crunchy wet grass is bristling between your toes and your skin is slightly warm due to the sun splaying down on you. Your eyes were locking onto the bright green inflatable pool nestled in the dead grass while a bench swing sways in the wind of the background. Your cousin’s golden retriever is hurrying around with the American Eskimo Pomeranian mix, playing in the water with glee. You pick up a squirt gun, the plastic rough against your fingers as you grip the trigger, spraying your cousin with cold water. The sound of splashing and barking makes you smile, laughing softly at the silliness of it all. Inhaling deeply, the metal scent of hose water hits you and you taste your salty sweat on your tongue as you lick your lips. Seeing your cousins so happy spending time with you out in the sun stays with you even as you left for home.

I'm a gal from Oregon, born and raised in this rainy paradise. I love writing and have been writing since I was very little as it's always been a passion of mine. I never would have submitted this if my current teacher didn't tell me it was good enough to be submitted. So just a quick thanks to Mr. Winch from New Urban High School. This poem is actually based on my own experience this previous summer, just being me and enjoying the day out with my cousins, though this time I wrote it in second person.
