Let’s look at my scarf, my head’s adorn

Light, pastel softness, not crown of thorn

All pride, honor, modest grace

Elegant beauty, confident in my space

Not what you had in mind?

Let’s consider my scarf, how this is my choice

My identity, security, my voice

All ambition, talent, kindness

Wonder at my strength, my smartness

Oh, not what you meant to say?

Let’s weaponize my scarf then, get it banned

Crusade fodder, heckled and yanked

Media circus, talk up a storm

Uncivilized scarf, can’t be the norm

More to your liking?

Let’s judge my scarf, feminist’s scar

Just asking for it, a fanatic’s war

Subservient and weak, these sister wives

Begging to be rescued from meek lives

There, feeling superior now?

The author's comments:

I am a junior in high school. I was inspired by a news article about Bangladeshi Muslim woman who bonded with her young son by playing Cricket with him -- in her burkha! (Burkha is a loose garment covering a woman from head to foot -- worn by some Muslim women). She was criticized by both the right and the left.
