Hearing
It starts with a single noise.
It starts with a single noise
And echoes faintly.
It starts with a noise
And echoes off of a wall
Creating a new, heightened sound.
It starts with a noise
And echoes into space
Filling the surroundings with an
Eternal sense of movement.
It starts with noise
And echoes, vibrating the
Surrounding space, before long
Another singer joins and
The sacred call grows.
It starts with noise
And echoes harmoniously, growing and
Changing, a chameleon in the air,
Flowing through our ears with multiple
Melodies, oscillating between high and low
Pitches, enchanting the mind.
It starts with noise
And echoes louder and louder
A virtuous polyphony of voices,
Growing deeper in my soul and
Into my heart, then into my limbs and through my
Spirit, the scalar motion swimming in
Gorgeous arches around my head.
It starts
The echoes grow and an infinite number of songs
Resonating deafeningly, crushing my spirit under the weight of the
Sound, hardly allowing my fingers to move until
I am forced to move everything,
Slipping through the breaths made in the song
In a form of dance, moving from
One breath to another until I am away from
That beautiful chaos, free from noise.
It ends
With total and absolute
Silence.

Hearing – also a selection from Senses – emulates the feelings and emotions that stir within me when I listen to music. What I love about this piece is how it grows physically as the music behind the writing grows tonally: it begins with small stanzas, drawn-out lines, but gradually grows to be larger stanzas with rushed, tumultuous lines.
