Do you remember the first time we met?

Let me set the scene

I cried

Don’t worry you weren’t mean, there wasn’t some unseen threat

We were four and I just didn’t know you yet

But when we met I’m not exaggerating the facts, I was stopped right in my tracks

Tears midstream, lungs mid-scream heart mid-beat

It was my average day, crazy age four better off ignored greeting

I heard my mom, un-calmly shout out hi

Saw a woman coming over something hidden, clinging to her thigh

It was lunchtime my stomach was aching, it was crunch time my composure was breaking

The schoolroom was cramped, I got ramped up

To throw a fit

That would make my mother haul me out of there lickety-split

And then I saw your face

My heart started to race

I had to brace myself

Because even at four years old

your mother’s leg in a death hold

Shrinking away in fear

You were the nearest thing to perfect I’d ever seen

You were wearing all jean, jacket and pant

Face unclean yet you still managed to enchant

Our parents laughed said it must have been some sort of witchcraft

I was so dumbfounded

My feet grounded in place, confoundment all over my face

Myself, I was supposed to introduce but I couldn’t get my tongue to let loose

And when I could finally speak

I said your name instead of mine

I thought you’d call me a freak

But you just laughed

It sounded like an angel’s song

Strong yet light

Joyous in spite of the world

And when you walked away it was like someone took an ashtray to my little heart

I knew if you ever walked away again it would break apart

So, later that day

When the dismay had worn away

I took my mother aside and said one day I’m gonna get down on one knee and ask that girl to be my bride

She replied with a smile and said you better spend every day till then making sure she’ll say yes

And I guess ever since I’ve tried to to do just that

At-tempting to earn your love

So when I get down on one knee and ask you to marry me today, will you send me away or let me forever stay?
