"though I may be going down, I'm taking flame over burning out" -sara bareilles, uncharted

The memories I cherish most are the ones I shared with you,

like the ones where we used to play chess for hours on end.

I would never let you win

but you’d never be upset.

You tolerated my flaws

and you supported me

even though every other step of the way you told me I was wrong.

You’d never go down without a fight

and I’d fall at your feet every time.

As much as I fight with you

you know that I will always fight for you.

There isn’t anything I can’t tell you

somehow you know everything.

Though I taught you how to play the game

you taught me that the object isn’t to win.

Brushing the dust off of the remainder of our chess set

I feel like the luckiest person in the world

not to have those chess pieces -

but to have a sister like you

I wrote this poem for my sister. It captures the dynamics of our relationship through one of the games we used to play: chess.
