nighttime in summer
when it rains
at night
i look up
at the tree shadows
reflected on my ceiling
outside of my window
and watch as they fight
against the battle
of the winds and rain
dripping wet, crying
as the branches struggle
to find home
and peace
the rustling sound
of the leaves
are comforting
to fall asleep to
if there’s a thunderstorm
my sister crawls into my bed
i hold her tight
she hugs me
our arms and legs
interlocked
we whisper about
her seven-year-old love life
and all the boys she likes
james, alex, jack
i can’t even keep
track of them
she tells me
about her friends
we giggle together
we talk about
any problems we have
places we want to go to
stuff about her life
stuff about my life
after a while, we stop
quiet down a bit
lay on our backs
holding hands
legs stacked up
on top of each other
like a sandwich
and listen to the rain
pitter-patter
if it's a normal night
my windows are open
that fresh air smell
is possibly one of my
favorite smells
it fills my room up
the crickets are chirping
my sister usually
comes over again
wanting one of our late-night chats
we don’t care how late
we stay up
i’m in a tee or tank
in loose shorts
all starfish spread out
on my bed
'cause it’s so hot
burning
sometimes when i’m feeling it
i climb out my window
and sit on the roof
smelling the air
loving it
listening as late-night cars
drive past
wondering what they’re doing
out so late
i feel free
on the top of the world
untroubled with anything
nothing could bother me
daytime in summer is pretty fun,
don’t get me wrong
but nighttime just hits
different

hi! I wrote this poem to express why I love summer, especially nighttime, without any worries. I hope you like it!
