Echo

Birds conversing in the spring

Come to a screeching halt

A cry for help is echoing

But not from a person’s call.

The gentle spirit of nature

Has found her voice at last

The gods have lifted her punishment

They let her relive her past.

Echo is herself again,

A talkative and bubbly girl,

She thanks the gods for freedom

And swears to remain peaceful.

Echo cries in joy, yet in moderation

But her freedom is short lived, this joyful liberation.

Echo falls back to her own ways

And her opinions go astray

The gods were filled with rage

So, they ended her last days.

And thus, are birthed second chances

A hope to redeem yourself

But carefully ponder your decisions

For thou might expose thyself.

The author's comments:

I have always been very interested in Greek and Roman mythology, and my love for mythology led me to writing about Echo. As a target of retribution, Echo becomes a victim of a heartbreaking end, and her touching story motivated me to try to inspire some optimism in this tale while still retaining the original message. I was still able to incorporate some of my own beliefs in this extension of Echo's story.
