Cynical Delight
Cynical Delight
Inspired from Millard Sheets Enchanted Island 1978
Symmetry, both sides almost even yet somewhat crooked.
Bones of a long-gone tree remain on the soft blanket of sand.
A vast landscape thrown against the backsplash of the sky.
As I gaze across the canvas, a story rolls through my mind.
A shark! It sneaks, creeps, and peeks remaining unseen except
for the uncanny sight of a large fin poking out of the water.
Vast monuments protrude through the undisturbed mirror,
the clouds are an umbrella contrasting the sun’s light.
A beach so gorgeous yet sober.
Every aspect of this beach is beautiful yet solemn,
why is this sad? The dingy colors make my soul cry.
My eyes pace around the canvas looking for reassurance.
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.
Happy? Bright? Joy? Love? Delight?
Will you help with my search?

The piece that inspired me and a few other classmates to write about is Enchanted Island by Millard Sheets. I personally have never written about art though this piece inspired me in a different way. I looked at some of Millard Sheet's other pieces and they are quite stunning. I highly encourage you to see some for yourself!
Thanks for reading!
