Celebratory Summer nights.

The fireworks hitting the night sky

As the stars absorb the remains of the blast’s light.

The smell of s’mores and hot dogs

As children chase each other without having to worry about

The troubles that they might know one day.

The adults chat with each other.

“Weather, taxes, bills, politics.”

Each has something they’re hiding,

Like their true reflection in a room full of mirrors.

Sitting on a bench while one leaf falls.

I ignore it, as you pull me in and place your arm around my shoulder.

Soothing Spring Mornings.

Worrying about exams, even though they’re already done.

Thinking about those celebratory Summer nights,

Though the weather feels like it’s already Summer.

Friends studying with each other,

Though it’s more gossip than learning.

Nothing to worry about

But the Sun kissing my skin,

Because Spring means we’re almost done with another semester.

Then I won’t have to think about which answer is right,

Because I’ll be partying away

On those celebratory

Summer Nights.

Warm Winter evenings.

Inside my house, keeping my blanket close to me,

So that the sparks from the blazing fire don’t strike it.

Watching a movie with my family,

A glass of hot chocolate in my hands, keeping my body from freezing.

The wind outside is howling, flying at such a pace

That if you went out there, you would lose your butterfly-shaped kite.

I ignore it, for my mind is wandering,

Thinking of those celebratory

Summer nights.

And now it’s Fall.

The leaves have all fallen, and there’s nobody to tell me it’ll all go back to normal.

The breeze ruffles my hair.

I’m sitting on the same bench we used to sit on during those celebratory

Summer nights.

Parents going back to work,

Students go back to school.

They’re too busy to know I’m missing them,

And I’m too busy and too tired to put up a fight.

So I suppose I’ll simply sit here, shivering slightly,

And think about those celebratory

Summer nights.

This poem has the narrator going back in time, reliving the days when they didn't feel so lonely. However, their return to reality reminds them that they're now reliving the isolation.
