I used too think...
I used to think…
I used to think love was prince charming,
Riding his horse through rocky cliffs.
Or fighting a raging fire-breathing beast,
Just to get to his princess, his happily ever after.
But I grew up a little and looked at my loving parents.
How they worked tirelessly every day,
And took care of five kids.
Then ended the night with a goodnight kiss
But once again, I grew up some more and
Thought love was the boy with long messy brown hair,
And brown eyes you could get lost in,
For days on end.
I used to think this is what love looked like.
But in time the princess only married the prince for his riches,
The hardworking lovers would abandon each other for different people,
And the boy would leave to go and better himself.
I used to think love was something you had with another,
But I was wrong once again.
Love is looking into the mirror,
and being okay with the image looking back at you.
Love is not caring about what others think,
on how you live your life.
Love is learning and rising from the mistakes,
you made along the journey.
I used to think I couldn't find that blazing true love but the funny thing is,
It's been here with me all along.
Glowing its gradient light inside.
True love is the love you can give to yourself.

I am a big romantic and this piece is about how love has been exemplified in my life. But in the end that wasn't real love, the real love I have found was found in myself. The love I gave to myself each day by getting out of bed looking in the mirror and smiling or reading poetry on rainy days.
