I, too, sing exhaustion

I am a sandbag

Bones weary and worn

A box filled with lead

Sinking

Drowning

Until I collide with the bottom, imploding on impact

Learning how to swim with weights on my feet

Striving for a goal

Falling behind

Reaching

Slipping out of my grasp like Tantalus

Starved

Searching,

Looking for the end

The sunrise coming through the clouds

I, too, am exhaustion

The author's comments:

This piece was inspired by Langston Hughes's poem I, too, sing America.
