Color Tube
Color Tube
When I was a kid,
I read a book that talked about the reason
that grandparents’ hair gets gray.
The book said,
the follicles make less melanin as aging,
which causes my grandparents’ hair to gray.
Like a tube of paint
that's filled to the brim,
eventually,
only the smears of color will be in the tube.
My grandmother worked so hard
throughout her youth,
that her tube was used too quickly.
As her hair evaporated its color,
her sealed memories started to disappear.
Her last signs of youth were gone.

Dear editors,
Attached is the poem for your consideration: “Color Tube.” It is about my grandmother who has been having dementia since I was little.
I am currently a senior at Catalina Foothills High School. I’ve been exploring poems on your literary journal website and am interested in submitting one of my poems to this website. I like to read poems/literature that reflect writers’ family and their childhood memories because reading those also allow me to think about my situation. When I looked up this journal website, I realized that lots of poems that are voted as top involve this nostalgic theme that I am interested in, so I think my poem would be a good fit for your journal.
Since lots of older people and their family struggle with dementia, reading my childhood perspective of dementia to how my grandmother has changed due to this disease would allow those readers to empathize with their situation.
I hope you find my poem interesting and impressive. Thank you for reading and considering my poem in your journal. I will look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Emily Song
