Just Because
Just because I’m a band kid who loves to play,
doesn’t mean that I’m socially awkward and gay.
I’m more “average” than you believe,
some things are different than what you’ve preconceived.
Just because I’m introverted,
doesn’t mean that I don’t care about having friends,
because being alone is where my energy stems.
Friends are part of my life too,
maybe the problem isn’t with me, it’s you.
Just because I get good grades,
doesn't mean that I’m perfect in every way.
I’m tired of people calling me that,
so please just stop and let’s have a chat.
You can see all my imperfections,
and hopefully that will help with your misconceptions.
Just because I’m happy being me,
please don’t get defensive,
let's agree.
People shouldn’t be ashamed of being themselves,
categorized in stereotypes like books on a shelf.
Everyone is deeper than originally seeming,
we’re all just humans, constantly dreaming.
Of a world without violence, hate, and greed,
of a world where we are guaranteed.
Happiness and success, defined in your own way,
so
What will you do to make someone smile today?

I wrote a poem for an English project where we were assigned to write a piece of poetry describing who we are, and who we are not. While I am proud to be all of the qualities listed above in the poem, I also know the typical stereotypes that go along with the title. I am not your average band kid, introvert, or nerd and it's hurtful when I'm judged for a reason that doesn't apply to me. I hope that this poem speaks to those out there who are also shoved under unfair stereotypes.
