I Cannot Be Apart

I hiked for days to find the perfect spot

Where the plump hummingbirds sang of our long-standing history

And where the rays of sunlight beamed to speak of my love for you

Since my tongue would go numb when I’d stare into your warm eyes.

I wish I could have brought you there, but time was against us

Because for every fleeting moment where you lay on that white cot,

I watched your race with death grow more certain,

And I knew the victor when your arm fell limp

And your hand fell out of mine.

Your eyes, now a cold reminder

That I had so much left to share.

But you can’t come to me,

So here I am traveling

One last time

To meet you in the plane beyond this world

Where the hummingbirds will rue our threnodies

And where we live with the sun

Shining down on the earth below;

On the earth that was once ours.

Originally, I wrote this piece accompanying a little art project that my sophomore english class did. but then I rewrote the poem to be more personal. I lose relationships often even though I feel like I've put so much effort into the future of those relationships, and this was meant to exhibit the lengths that I'd go to keep those relationships that I had with people: giving up my future to spend the rest of my existence happily with the people I care about.
