Forever and Always
She felt as though everything was pointless,
Meaningless, now.
The lingering glances and careful smiles,
That started in admiration and curiosity,
Now empty eyes and sad smiles.
She knows she's the reason
The light behind her eyes burned out.
Just how the late summer nights spent sneaking around,
With their backs to the windshield,
Their intertwined hands sitting between them,
Their gazes locked on the sky, deep blue,
And the gleaming stars,
Are no more.
The cold and icy winter they’d spent indoors,
When the snow filled the driveway quickly,
But there wasn’t a worry in sight.
She wanted it forever and always.
The flecks of snow in her hair and the blush
That filled her cheeks when she told her just that.
Those frigid nights, just a memory now.
But the emptiness she feels now,
Is as profound as ever.
Their best wasn’t enough and it's her fault.
For letting them come in between them.
For letting them know the one flaw they tucked away.
For letting her go.
